Party candidates face New College students in political debate

New College Pontefract will host a question time debate on Friday 13 May, ahead of the European Union Referendum in June.

Labour MP Yvette Cooper (Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford), Conservative MP Andrea Jenkyns (Morley and Outwood), Labour MEP Richard Corbett (Yorkshire and Humber) and UKIP MP Toby Horton (Thirsk and Malton) will be the line up of panellists participating in the event at the outstanding sixth form college.

The debate will see students given the chance to quiz, in a live broadcast, politicians from three of the major national parties. For all students above 18, this will be their first chance to vote in a referendum.

Principal Pauline Hagen, said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to become involved and be part of the process of what will be a very important referendum this year. The debate will help engage students in the democratic process.”
