Why should I study Certificate in Use of Maths?
This is a new course, an alternative to GCSE Maths, designed to engage students who are less comfortable with abstract maths, by focusing on the application of maths to relevant contexts.
It is practical and relevant to the real world, educating students not only in mathematical skills but also in problem solving and modelling.
It is suitable for students who have a Grade F or G at GSCE Maths.
What will I study?
The course is a combination of two Free-Standing Mathematics Qualifications (FSMQs) and one Core Unit.
Money Management (FSMQ Level 1)
Within the context of money, students will become more competent in:
- The use of basic formulae and algebraic representation in spreadsheets
- The use of statistical diagrams
Using Data (FSMQ Level1)
This FSMQ:
- Provides students with a strong basis of numerical mathematical skills
- Focuses on the organisation of data and its representation using statistical diagrams and Cartesian graphs
The Core Unit
Enables you to apply your knowledge, skills and understanding to relevant real-world situations in a variety of contexts. Subject areas tested may include elements of:
- Using calculators and computers
- Number
- Algebra
- Geometry and measures
- Statistics
How is the course assessed?
Each FSMQ is assessed by a 1 hour exam, with a pre-release data sheet.
The Core Unit is assessed by a 1ΒΌ hour examination.
What will this Course prepare me for?
The qualification is accepted by various Universities, including the University of Brighton and Herriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. It would provide a good general grounding in Mathematics should you wish to attempt GCSE Maths the following year.
What are the entry requirements?
GSCE Maths grade F or G
What skills do I need?
- Recall and use of mathematical facts and techniques
- Ability to apply mathematics to real life contexts
- Efficient use of a calculator
How will I be taught?
The class will probably be taught by one teacher using a variety of methods. Some computer facilities are available both in class and on the College network.
Private Study
As an approximate guide this course will require 1 hour of private study per week, with further time required in preparation for exams.
What materials will I need to purchase?
Calculator, mathematical equipment.
