Why should I study BTEC Advanced Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism?
This is a vocational qualification that provides students with the opportunity to learn about the travel and tourism industry. It provides the equivalent of one A Level qualification and can be studied alongside more traditional A Level subjects. It teaches students about how the industry works and looks at the appeal and development of destinations worldwide, as well developing skills that will help you in whatever career you choose to follow. It could also lead to further study in Travel and Tourism related fields at university.
What will I study?
You will study a total of 6 units over 2 years. These units include:
- Investigating the Travel and Tourism Sector
- The Business of Travel and Tourism
- The UK as a destination
- Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
- Long-haul Travel Destinations
- European Destinations
What are the entry requirements?
Normal entry requirements. GCSE English grade C would be desirable.
What skills do I need?
In order to succeed in the BTEC Advanced Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism you need to be punctual, well organised and have a good attention to detail. It helps if you are creative and you are a good time manager. Additionally, you need to be able to work hard and meet deadlines.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through coursework. It is 100% coursework based qualification, with no exams to sit.
What will this course prepare me for?
This course will give you a good understanding of how the travel and tourism industry works, which could allow you to progress to a career in this area or even continue with further study at university.
Private study
You will be expected to complete at least 4 hours of private study a week. This work is outside the classroom will enable you to complete your coursework tasks and achieve your target grade.
What materials will I need to purchase?
Basic stationery is needed for the Advanced Subsidiary in Travel and Tourism. You will need to purchase paper, pens and a lever arch file and dividers. We would also advise that you purchase a USB stick to help with the completion of coursework in private study time.

As part of the course you will be expected to take part in a variety of educational visits. These visits form an important aspect of the qualification and experiences from these visits will allow you to complete specific coursework tasks. In the past students have visited Blackpool, Edinburgh and York. There are also opportunities for overseas visits.
