Why should I study Photography?

Photography aims to develop your visual thinking, the course also helps build a foundation for further study of any of the visual arts. You will be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques. The study of digital media will be a central feature of the course.

What will I study?

GCSE Units

Coursework

Unit 1:
This concentrates on the study and practice of digital photography but you will also have the opportunity to explore traditional darkroom photography. You will keep a journal in which to record ideas and development prior to producing a final coursework piece.

This represents 60% of the final GCSE mark.

Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment
This represents the culmination of the skills that you will have acquired during the course. You are given eight weeks to research and prepare for a 10 hour practical examination.

This represents 40% of the GCSE mark.

What are the entry requirements?

You should have achieved a good range of GCSEs (or equivalent) mainly at grades D and E.

What skills do I need?

• An ability to respond to other photography work
• An interest in the visual arts is essential
• An ability to research, experiment and develop ideas visually
• An ability to sustain personal lines of enquiry

How will I be taught?

A variety of methods will be used including demonstrations, discussions, group work and worksheets. The vast majority of the course is based on hands-on practical work allowing you to develop your individual creative skills and ideas.

How is the course assessed?

Photography is a practical coursework subject and will be continually assessed. You will be marked across four assessment objects which will include: developing ideas, image analysis, organising information and practical skills.

What will this course prepare me for?

You will be able to progress to a career that requires A level qualification.

As well as careers in photography, art, design and media studies and many others involving creativity and/or the visual arts.

There is also the opportunity to progress to AS and A level courses in Photography at college.

Private Study

As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
