New College student wins top prize in Physics

Physics student Mason Parker at New College Pontefract has won the first prize in the 2016-17 Physics Challenge at the University of Lincoln, School of Mathematics and Physics.

The Year 13 student, who also studies maths, further maths and chemistry, will be presented with his award before the first annual Robert Grosseteste Lecture in Astrophysics and Cosmology at the university on Thursday, 23 February.

The competition was made up of five tough questions incorporating all aspects of physics from standard mechanics to quantum phenomena, making it an overall test of knowledge, understanding and determination.

Mason said: “I decided to enter the competition over Christmas after it was suggested to me by my Further Maths teacher at New College. I started with just the hopes of having a good time and possibly learning some new things. My competitive side soon kicked in and I become more determined to succeed. I really enjoyed the experience, persevering through and coming to solutions for questions that at first glance looked impossible was an amazing feeling.

“New College has supported me a great deal in my studies. The outstanding level of teaching and support has made me truly enjoy and embrace science and maths. I may have worked as an individual on the competition but without the skills and knowledge gained from College I wouldn’t have been able to even consider participating.”

Dean Morgan, New College Head of Chemistry and Physics, said: “The physics department are incredibly proud of Mason and his achievements in this competition. The problems that he solved were really complex and his solutions were incredibly detailed. He put a lot of effort into this and is a well-deserved winner. Well done, Mason.”
