NEW College Student selected for UK Youth Committee

Pegah Moulana, a year 13 student at NEW College, Pontefract, has been selected to sit as a member for the UK Youth Select Committee for 2015/16.

The 18-year-old will be working alongside the government to represent mental health services. Pegah hopes that as a result of this consultation process, legislative changes will be put in place to ensure every young person in the country has easier access to mental health services.

Pegah, who studies Politics, Business and Law at the sixth form college, will get the chance to scrutinise public issues with ten other young people who won a place on the committee.

Speaking of her new position she said: “It was very competitive and most people who applied were current Members of the UK Youth Parliament, so the challenge of getting selected wasn’t easy. I can’t wait to start.”

The Youth Select Committee is a British Youth Council (BYC) initiative, supported by the House of Commons, and mirrors the parliamentary Select Committee structure. Mental health issues were identified by the Youth Parliament in 2014 as the top priority for young people in the UK.
