NEW College Netball team proved too strong for visitors Hall Cross on Wednesday. Man of the Match performances from Laura Evans, Jess Furniss and Faye Bunko led the home side to a fantastic victory over a good Hall Cross Netballing side.
With Pontefract guaranteed second place in the league, they challenged the Doncaster school to a dual. With neither side having played each other before, both did not know what to expect. Hall Cross started like they meant business, showing a physical side to them that agitated some of the NEW College players. Captain Laura Evans instructed the team to dig deep and to not be out muscled by the bigger team. Once NEW College settled into the game, shooter Jess Furniss took her shots well and leveled the scores at the half-time interval. The home side could not put the game to bed though, as Hall Cross continued to answer each point scored by NEW College. It took some determined play by Faye Bunko to stretch the scores and push Pontefract into the lead in the final quarter. A mix of quick passing, excellent shooting and sheer determination, saw NEW College provide shooter Furniss with chance after chance to shoot. Furniss finished each shot well, with many from the edge of the D.
Pontefract now have a week off to prepare to face York College who will offer another highly competitive game.
