Human Physiology & Health

Why should I study Human Health and Physiology?

The course is a one-year course designed specifically to meet the needs of post-16 students. The College follows the Foundation and Higher Level Syllabus which leads to GCSE grades C to A*. You may wish to take this course in order to improve a current GCSE Science grade or to acquire a Biology/Science qualification required for an intended career or HE course.

What will I study?

  • Various aspects of human health and physiology including the main human body systems
  • How science is used by health professionals such as doctors, midwives and nutritionists.
  • The contributions of scientists who have made significant breakthroughs in medicine

Topics covered:

  • Cells, Nutrition and Digestion
  • Blood and Circulation
  • Gas exchange
  • Excretion
  • Nerves and hormones
  • Skeleton, muscles and movement
  • Reproduction and growth
  • Genetics
  • Disease

In addition students will study aspects of some health care professions:

  • Cytologists
  • Dieticians
  • Dentists
  • Optometrists
  • Midwives
  • Health Visitors

What are the entry requirements?

You should have achieved a good range of GCSEs (or equivalent) mainly at grades D and E.

What skills do I need?

  • An interest in the biology of humans
  • Enthusiasm for practical work
  • A willingness to improve exam technique
  • A commitment to meeting deadlines

How will I be taught?

Your lessons will involve learning new information using a variety of resources including:

  • Worksheets
  • Videos
  • CD-roms
  • Practicals
  • Demonstrations

The key information is recorded on ‘summary sheets’ which form the basic notes for your revision.

How is the course assessed?

There is a 2 hour written exam counting for 75%. This can be taken at Foundation or Higher level.

There is an externally set, internally assessed test and practical counting for 25% of the final mark.

What will this course prepare me for?

On successful completion of the course there is also the opportunity to progress to AS and A Level courses in Biology at college.

Private study

As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
