Why should I study BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport (Level 3)?
A BTEC subsidiary diploma is designed to be a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You must have an interest in all aspects of sport not just the practical side of the subject. It is equivalent of one A’ level which means you can combine it with other BTEC’s or A’ Levels in order to apply directly to higher education establishments are find employment in the field of sport. To be able to complete all coursework tasks you will need to have basic knowledge of IT programmes such as word, power point and excel. You will also need to feel confident in working within small and large groups and taking responsibility for leading groups of students your own age.
This is a two year course.
What will I study?
Unit 1 The Body in Action (Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport)
This unit provides students with the knowledge and understanding of how the body responds and adapts to exercise. It begins by examining the structure of the skeletal and muscular systems and their role in producing movement in physical activity and sport.
Unit 2 Training and Fitness for Sport (The Physiology of Fitness)
This unit introduces students to the concept and practice of fitness training and training programme design for different client groups.
Unit 3 Health and Safety in Sport (Assessing Risk in Sport):
This unit will introduce students to aspects of health and safety and their relevance in the working environment in sport.
Unit 7 Fitness Testing for Sport (and exercise):
This unit provides an introduction to the concept and practice of health screening and fitness testing.
Unit 11 Sports Nutrition
This unit is designed to give students the knowledge to give nutritional advice to a wide range of individuals including sports people, individuals wanting to lose weight and individuals wanting to gain muscle mass.
Unit 17: Psychology for Sports Performance
This unit focuses upon the psychology of performance in individual and team sport. Specifically it focuses on the extent to which the human mind plays a role in performance.
What are the entry requirements?
Normal college entry requirements plus Merit or Distinction at BTEC (Certificate or Diploma). GCSE English grade C desirable.
What skills do I need?
- Some personal involvement in sport or exercise at any level.
- Computer literacy.
How will I be taught?
A variety of teaching methods are used, ranging from PowerPoint presentations, to practical sessions to research lessons. BTEC Sport is the study of sport, and as such contains large sections of theory.
How is the course assessed?
All units are 100% coursework. Units are assessed and graded, an overall grade for the qualification is awarded with either a pass, merit or distinction.
What will this course prepare me for?
BTEC Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education (universities and colleges). If you want to get a job straight away you could work in Sports Centres; Leisure Centres; Outdoor Activities Centres. If you decide to go to university or college and you have other qualifications, you could take a degree or a BTEC Higher National in subjects such as: Sports Studies; Leisure Management; Recreation Management ;Teacher training.
Private Study
Tasks will continuously be set throughout the course. 3-4 hours private study per week are recommended to complete all tasks to the highest level possible.
What materials will I need to purchase?
BTEC Sport textbook, as available from PE department.
Recommended to buy BTEC Sport Practical kit - t-shirt/polo shirt with name and number on back.

You enjoy meeting regular work deadlines, don't like exam assessment and have a passion for sport.
BTEC Sport is not for you if
You want to be assessed on your practical sporting ability and you do well in exams, then the A Level PE route is more appropriate for you.
