Why should I study BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism?
This is a specialist course which focuses on the education and training of students who are wishing to enter into a career in Travel and Tourism. It is a vocational qualification which means that whilst providing a 3 A Level equivalent qualification in Travel and Tourism it also provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop the skills that they need in order to progress within the Travel and Tourism Industry. It can also lead to further study in Travel and Tourism related fields at university. It teaches students about how the industry works and looks at the appeal and development of destinations, teaches useful skills for the workplace and looks at tourism from many different perspectives.
This subject can also be taken as a 1 A Level equivalent by taking the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism.
What will I study?
You will study a total of 18 units over the two years of the course. These units will include:

- The Business of Travel and Tourism
- The UK as a destination
- Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
- Marketing Travel and Tourism products and Services
- Preparing for employment in Travel and Tourism
- Long-haul Travel Destinations
- Responsible Tourism
- Specialist Tourism
- Working as a Holiday Representative
Along with an additional 8 units of study.
What are the entry requirements?
Normal entry requirements. GCSE English grade C would be desirable.
What skills do I need?
In order to succeed in the BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism you need to be punctual, well organised and have good attention to detail. It helps if you are creative and you are a good time manager. Additionally you need to be able to work hard and meet deadlines.
How will I be taught?
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism is a course that is delivered across two years. You will spend 12 lessons a week focusing on a variety of areas relating to travel and tourism. You will be required to complete a coursework task for each unit approximately every two weeks, which could be made up of a written report, a display, a PowerPoint presentation, some role plays or another task. You will be working on three units at once, with different members of staff.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through coursework. There are no exams. It is a 100% coursework based qualification.
What will this course prepare me for?
This course will give you an excellent knowledge of travel and tourism allowing you to progress to a career in this area or even continue with further study at university.
Private study
You will be expected to do at least 6 hours private study a week. This work outside of the classroom will enable you to complete your coursework task and achieve your target grades.
What materials will I need to purchase?
Basic stationery is needed for the Extended Diploma. You will need to purchase pens, paper and a lever arch folder, along with dividers.
