Why should I study BTEC Diploma in Music?
BTEC Music is an exciting course for students wishing to enhance their performance skills. It is all coursework based and in this two year course students will research about how the music industry works and organise their own gigs, form their own groups and develop ensemble and solo performance skills. BTEC students are expected to perform in and out of college, in various venues around the area and make use of college’s recording studio facilities.
This is a two year course and counts for 2 A Levels.
What will I study?
You will study three core units and nine specialist units.
Core Unit 1 Music and Society
The way that everybody interacts with music.
Core Unit 2 Music Project
This is a performance unit for you to create and take part in a live music event.
Core Unit 3 The Sound and Music Industry
How the industry works.
Specialists Units
You will choose from a range of performance and theoretical topics
What are the entry requirements?
Normal college entry requirements plus GCSE Music grade C or a good standard of vocal performance or the ability o play one or more instruments. GCSE English grade C would be desirable.
What skills do I need?
You will be an instrumentalist and/or vocalist.
Good ICT skills in addition.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught in classes, in groups and individually. In addition, you should be having lessons on your instrument of voice
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is by practical’s and coursework. In addition to your teacher, the college will be allocated the External Verifier who will oversee all your work.
What will this course prepare me for?
Vocations in the music sector of the performing arts.
Private study
As an approximate guideline the BTEC Level 3 Diploma requires 6-8 hours per week of independent study. You should have instrumental or vocal lessons and read the music and trade press.

BTEC National Certificate in Music is the open door to music. It is about you and how you understand music. It values your interest both in and out of lessons. It fulfils vocational and academic requirements. It is accepted by all Higher Educational Institutions. It is different from A Level - all work is course work. The three core units are the background and the practical music making. The nine specialist units are where you really shape your own course and develop your own interests. You will record your work on PC, on video and in sound.
