BTEC Diploma in Creative Media Production

Why should I study BTEC Creative Media Production?

Media Studies will give you the opportunity to study many aspects of the media industries as well as practical, vocational skills and to apply this knowledge in creating media products.

NOTE: The BTEC is a 2 year course. You must complete both years to achieve this qualification.

What will I study?

The course is made up of a number of separate units.

The first 3 units will develop your skills in a number of areas, including pre-production, research and communication skills. The following units will then be a mixture of theory, investigation and production. You will study different elements of media industries, understanding the ways in which they operate and their place in society. You will also focus on more specific practical skills which may involve video editing, print layout and design and the creation of fully developed media products.

What are the entry requirements?

5 A* - C grades (from across 4 different subjects) including English and Maths.

How will I be taught?

Teaching methods in Media Studies are as varied as the content, consisting of individual interviews, small group work and whole class teaching and discussion. There will be tutorial sessions on all technical aspects of the course, such as using software and equipment. Staff will employ a range of techniques and materials and delivery will be engaging and varied.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is all done through college set assignments; there is no external examination. A series of assignments will be set throughout the year which will cover all relevant areas. The grades available are Pass, Merit or Distinction. The Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to 1 A Level.

What will this course prepare me for?

As well as giving you the research, analytical and creative skills required for a variety of different subjects, the course will prepare you for both further academic study of media and/or employment in the media sector.

Private study

As a practical subject, there are demands to work outside of lesson time, whether it be filming or taking pictures outside of college or using free time and workshops in college to continue with practical work and research tasks.

BTEC Media is for you if

You have an interest in both the theoretical and creative applications of Media concepts and practices. You have an interest in using media technologies, including Apple Macintosh computers and Adobe software; to complete the 100% assessed course work.

BTEC Media is not for you if

You perform better in examinations and do wish to experience the vocational aspect of media, including very strict deadlines.
